Posted August 10, 2021 Hello, Next up in the cartridge belt series are 1880s Mills cavalry cartridge belts. I have shown two belts in the cavalry grouping picture. The top belt is M1881 woven Mills belt and the second is the short lived model 1881 Metcalf or Sherman belt with a period modification.

The Model 1896 Mills Belt did have six cartridge loops in addition to rifle loops they were for the .38, but with some effort and some water, they could stretch to accommodate the larger .45 round just as the .4570 round could be made to fit into the smaller .3040 loops.

The author calls the belt a M1886 and says that it is the last true Prairie Belt. He also states the belt holds forty five 4570 government carbine rounds. Over the years when I found this belt for sale, the seller referred to the belt as a cavalry officer's cartridge belt designed to hold 45 LC rounds.

In 1880 the miles board contracted out to Anson Mills and between 1881 and 1890 a new belt plate was added to a similar style belt for the 45/70 cartridge. Over the years five different variants were made. The buckle was a brass stamped sheet with a raised US in a recessed oval and the reverse of the plate was marked, Ansom Mills. Pat.
