A couple thoughts: On my mill (and most of the homebrewscale mills that I know of) only one of the rollers is powered. The nonpowered roller spins in sync with the powered roller naturally as the grain gets caught by the powered roller. It may not be that much more expensive to power the mill if you use a handheld power drill to power it.

The rolls are often about 250mm ( in.) in diameter (in wet mills they are often larger). As noted the rolls are usually fluted and may run at different speeds. Both may be driven but sometimes only one is powered, the `follower' being dragged by the friction between the grist and the moving, powered roll.

I built something similiar last year and love it. My motor has 44 inch lbs of torque and even though I start my motor/mill first before adding grains it has never bogged down at all. Definitely better than using a 1/2" VSR drill IMHO. I have been all grain for nearly 5 years. Thought it was about time to "upgrade".

The mill is mahogany and white oak body with white oak roller support slider for gap adjustment. Mahogany plywood hopper. 2" x 8" hardened tool steel rollers powered by a 200rpm gear motor. The torque on the motor is unreal. I'd like a bigger hopper, but it mills as fast as I can pour the grain in, so it's not that big of a deal for me.

First I roughed up the rollers with a concrete drill bit. I really got after it to the point where there were metal shavings flying everywhere. This took about 10 minutes with my electric drill. I had started with my cordless, but there just wasn't enough staying power so I switched. Then I removed the roller base and took the roller apart.

First, cut four 8″ x 12″ pieces from the board. Attach these together to make the outer frame. Make sure to mark the center lines on the longer length of the frame. Drill holes for the axle bolts ″ from the center, and ″ from the bottom of the frame.

Assemble the rollers with the hardware as can be seen in the fourth picture, or as follows: end of bolt, plastic spacer, washer, bronze bushing, nut threaded to end of threads, tap handle adapter attached to roller. The bushings should fit snugly in the holes drilled in the outer casing.
