The mill is a HP Bridgeport Series I Turret Miller BRJ2. The small screw I mentioned is called a "Washer head screw". The larger screw is the "Cross feed nut retaining screw". I have "Backlash Adjustment instructions" that tell me to back off the small screw, then tighten the large screw (while slowly turning the table handle).

Ball screws are required with a CNC mill. While CNC control is on the servo or stepper holds the screws tight all the time. In manual though the ball screws will move (creep) when not intended. The original acme screw has more hold on the non moving axis. So if you have ball screws you need to always tighten down the non moving axis.

312. Can't say for sure about the Lagun, but my Willis mill had to have a special cast yoke for ball screws when I retrofit a SWI SMX CNC package. The Acme screws/nuts are smaller in diameter. Also can't say if the BP screws are the same configuration even if the same table length applies. I'd think ground screws would be more accurate though ...

My experience with the X ball screw was painless enough to go ahead and disassemble the Y axis screw and clean it thoroughly also. Maybe not for the faint of heart, but with the ball nuts I had, this was relatively easy to reassemble since all the screws were the same size and the preload is done with a spacer. They certainly work much better now.

My Bridgeport currently has a set of ball screws from the original Mill Power conversion, which was removed by the previous owner. It is now strictly a manual machine. The screws are longer than standard because of the MP setup but I've been able to use it as is.
